M.C.C. v. S. AUSTRALIA
GRIMMETT IN FORM LOW SCORING GENERAL (By Cable -Press Assn.—Copyright.) ADELAIDE, November 8. The M.C.C. team to-day began a match here against the South Australian eleven. The South • Australian bowlers won an early success against the English amateurs, who, winning the toss, batted first in the match, which was played at Adelaide Oval. The wickets and the outfield were perfect. The weather was sultry. Dawson and Duleepsinhji' batted stylishly, and Turnbull played a lively innings. The other batsmen, except Nichols, could not cope with Grimmett’s googlies. Nichols batted forcefully in a last wicket stand, hitting two sixes. His batting was the brightest patch in England’s innings. Outstanding performances for Smith Australia were Grimmett’s bowling and the wicket keeping of Walker, who is a candidate for the trip to England. England’s innings closed for 168 runs. South Australia did not make an impressive opening against the English bowling, of which Barratt and. Nichols were the most destructive features. Two wickets were down at 34, both to Barratt. A stand was made by Prichard and Richardson, who took the score to 73, when Richardson and Lonergan were dismissed by successive deliveries from Nichols.
South Australia had now slumped badly, after being in a good position, but Prichard and Whitfield carefully held the fort until stumps were drawn. Scores: — M.C.C.—First Innings.
