HEROISM ACKNOWLEDGED

NEW ZEALAND AWARDS. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 7. ’ Awards for bravery were made to-day by the Court of Directors of the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand as follows:— William Horn Henderson, of Huntly, Waikato—Silver Medal. Henderson, a trucker in Rotowaro coal mine, Huntly, rescued Joseph O’Brien from beneath a .fall of coal, and with O’Brien, then attempted to rescue Samuel Broadbent, though the releasing of a heavier fall of call could be expected at any minute. The expected fall happened. About one hundred tons fell, killing Broadbent, burying O’Brien, and severely injuring Henderson. Despite injury, he succeeded in rescuing O’Brien for a second time. Still another fall occurred after* Henderson’s efforts finally succeeded. Louis Saunders, New Brighton.— Bronze medal. Saunders rescued Kathleen Goodenough from drowning at Brooklands on October 6. Miss Goodenough was attacked by cramp when bathing in deep water at New Brighton, and was bejng carried off by the current. Saunders and a man named Waklyn went to the rescue fully dressed and brought the girl ashore. William McGhee, Wellington, waterside worker, —Certificate. McGhee rescued John Wilson, ship’s cook, from drowning in Wellington Harbour on August 27. Elliott McKane Major, of Toko, Taranaki’, and Henry Alexander Boswell, of Eltham. —Letters of commendation for assistance in rescues from drowning on January 13. 1
