ELSIE WALKER CASE

MR STATEMENT. (Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, November 7. Tn a statement regarding the Elsie Walker case, made in the House today, by the Minister of Justice (Mr Wilford), he said he was satisfied that no good purpose could be served by re-opening the inquest. The inquest in the case was not a trial of any person for murder or manslaughter, and it was considered unnecessary to reopen the inquest because (1) no .good purpose could be served as no fresh evidence bearing on the cause of the death had been discovered; (2) additional information ascertained since the close of the inquest was contradictory and of little if any evidential value; (3) as already stated, the present law provided for adequate action by the police should fresh evidence be .forthcoming. The police had. investigated more alleged evidence than had ever been published in the newspapers, but there was not the slightest justification for the re-opening of the inquest.
