Known as a desperate criminal and gaol breaker, John Williams eluded the warders and escaped over the wall of Ballarat gaol. Leonard Bowen, who essayed to escape with him, was captured when climbing over the wall. Williams has escaped on several previous occasions. The police are scouring the densely wooded country for the escapee.
