SHARKEY’S EASY WIN

AN EARLY KNOCK-OUT

LOUGHRAN OUTCLASSED

(Australian Press Assn.) (By Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.)

NEW YORK, September 26. The Sharkey-Loughran fight resulted in a win for Sharkey. In the first round they sparred in mid-ring. They were trying each other out with jabs to the face. Sharkey hooked both hands to the head, then Loughran sent in a stiff uppercut. The round was even.

In the second round, they sparred at long range. Their blows were light, and they clinched repeatedly. It was Sharkey’s round. In the third round Sharkey swung a left to the head. Then Sharkey dropped Loughran with a right to the jaw, winning on a technical knock-out. The final knock-out blow was delivered 27 seconds after the beginning of the third round, and it came unexpectedly. The wariness of the men throughout the opening rounds of the contest, and their tendency to box at a distance had promised a drawn-out contest. The sharp and decisive manner in which Sharkey disposed of his opponent demonstrated that Loughran has no place among the heavyweights of today. Smashing through Loughran’s feeble guard at the opening of the third, Sharkey sent his opponent to the floor. Then Loughran staggered to his feet, but he did not know where he was, and reeled on the ropes to a neutral corner. Sharkey was ready to deliver a finishing punch, but it was not necessary *as the referee stepped between the men and declared Sharkey the winner. Loughran was carried to his corner, and he was then ready to continue the contest, but the fight was over.

In the words of one competent observer, “It was one of those fights where the boxing skill of one of the contenders (Loughran) counted for nothing against the sudden agressiveness and superior power of his opponent.”

GAGNON V. MALONEY.

NEW YORK, September 26.

Gagnon ■won on a foul from Maloney, in the seventh round of a ten rounds bout, as a post final to the big match.
