(United Service.) (By Cable—Press Assn.—Copyright.)
(Received August 28, 9 a.m.) DELHI, August 27.
After an exciting chase down the River Hooghly, officers of the Calcutta Customs, last night, made a haul of 1175 ounces of cocaine, valued at over £13,000, from the fishing smack Garden Reach. Observing a smack moving suspiciously away from a steamer’s side, Customs officers pursued it, instructing the oarsmen to dip the oars as silently as possible. The smugglers, aware of the pursuit, immediately pulled away, an exciting race ultimately resulting in their being overtaken.
The smugglers jumped overboard, abandoning forty-seven tins, each containing 25ozs. of cocaine.
