SYDNEY, Aug. 28.

When a police party raided a wine saloon at Clybucca near Kempsey, a man stated to be the proprietor of the saloon produced a double barrelled gun, and fired eight shots at the police. Constable Foley was wounded in the leg, but the man was arrested at the revolver point.

The police report states that the man refused to open the door to them. Later, he appeared on the balcony and fols them to clear out. When the constables made a move towards the door, the man opened fire. The police withdrew, but later surrounded the house and gained admittance.

Later, William May was charged with shooting Foley, with intent to murder him.

DUNEDIN, August 28.

Leonard Garlick, police constable, was fined two pounds for being on the premises of the Port Chalmers Hotel. A Sergeant gave evidence that defendant was on night duty at the time. Witness saw the dooi’ opened by the licensee and defendant stepped out in uniform. Defendant said he had entered the hotel and taken the names of men in the bar on a piece of note paper. He was neither drinking nor loitering in the hotel. The Magistrate said that the Sergeant’s evidence was corroborated by another constable, and he held that defendant was unlawfully on the premises.
