The Swiftpool is the first new steamship on Lloyd’s British register, desighed for world trading, which is completely dependent on powdered fuel firing. She is being inspected by experts at West Hartlepool. She is of nine thousand tons, with a length of 421 feet, and is unique insofar as she has no alternative, for the handfired boiler is designed solely to operate on the brand system of powdered fuel. The main bunkers’ capacity is two thousand tons. An arrangement with the upper deck hatch has been provided for trimming the coal into daily service bunker. There are two pulverisers on the stoke hold floor convenient to the bunkers for breaking down slack coal. There is a reserve fuel supply overhead in the stokehold, sufficient for several hours’ steaming, with the pulverisers out of action.
