RICCARTON NOTES. (Special to “Star.”) CHRISTCHURCH, September 28. Count Cavour has not done much since tracing at Ashburton, and he cannot, be at.his best for his Dunedin engagements. A couple of races at Wingatui should be of great benefit to him. . After contesting the Geraldine Cup, Town Bank was very sore, and could not fulfil his second day s engagement. With tracks becoming harder, there appears to be little chance of his coming through the New Zealand Cup preparation. • Another whose name will be missing from the Cup field is Countersign, who recently went amiss, and is at present turned out. As her stable mate, Sainia, is also under a cloud, it looks as if Scoullar will have only Rotor to depend on next November. Though she had not sported silk for several months, Set Sai] demonstrated by her success in the Geraldine Cup, that she is more forward' than her appearance indicated. She was ridden a nice race in behind Pink Note and Alalmsey, till well into the home straight. No sooner had Pink Note taken Malmsey’s measure, than Set Sail came along with one of her characteristic finishes, and just got up in time to repeat her performance of twelve months ago, by a head; and as a New Zealand Cup trial the Dunedin mare’s performance was quite satisfactory, and under such .a handy impost as 7.3, she must be given a good chance in the November race. After an unsuccessful trip to Sydney, Arikiwai is back again at Riccarton. He was sore before leaving, and trouble developed. It is intended to blister him and turn him out for several months.

There was a peculiar happening in connection, with the Ohapi Hack Handicap at Geraldine. After winning the Trial Plate at Ashburton, First Raid was penalised 101 b. for tlhe Geraldine race, and had actually weighed out with the extra weight in the saddle, and the condition of the programme stated that any winner after declaration of weights may be rehandicapped, and it was under that condition that the handicapper imposed the penalty. Just at the last minute the Stipendiary Steward discovered that according to the rules- of racing, the winner of any special weight race, such as that at Ashburton, could not be penalised, and this made First Raid’s task a particularly easy one. Aljme made his debut as a hurdler at Geraldine, and only for one very bad jump, that cost him several lengths, would have reversed positions with Radiate. After running a poor race, in the Hurdle Race at Geraldine, Royal Land was sold for the proverbial song to Air H. G. AlacDonald, president of tbe club.

Zeuxis was responsible for a remarkable performance in winning the

Raukapuka Handicap. He was so slow to begin that before half the journey had been covered, he was driving the field in what looked a. hopeless position. Turning on a torrent of speed over the last two furlongs, he raced through the big field and just got up in time to defeat Caihisader on the post. ~ , Rapier made two efforts at Geraldine, but on neither occasion could he muster the necessary speed to keep anywhere near the leaders. In the early stages, he did not gallop with ins accustomed freedom, and the fact ot his being bandaged on both fore legs, suggests that all may not be quite well with him. In the President’s Handicap he finished last, quite two lengths lengths behind Thorndale. . IN THE SHADE. SYDNEY, September 28. The veterinary surgeon reports that In the Shade is very sore, and it may be some time before he can be placed on the track again. It is, unlikely In the Shade will compete at the Spring Meeting.
