S. I. MOTOR UNION

CONFERENCE DECISIONS

(Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, September 28

The South Island Alotor Union carried the following resolution : —That owing to the necessity for the Highways Board having a closer knowledge of local district conditions, and a better understanding of local district problems, than is possible at present, the time is ripe for the establishment of separate Boards for the North and South Islands. It was generally agreed by the delethat if the South Island could not get a Board of its own, at least the South Island motorists should get an extra representative on the present Board. It was decided to prepare a questionnaire for Parliamentary candidates on the subject. “It is high time that we objected, not only to the reflector, regulations, but also to the civil servants being legislators. ” said the Chairman, Air A. E. Ansell. “It is time we informed the Government that we are not going' to allow the country to be run' by civil servants.’’ A resolution was before the meeting that tbe Government be asked to cancel the regulations referring to red reflectors on motor cars, declaring the use of these reflectors a waste of money, not providing any added measures of safety for road users. Other members spoke' strongly concerning the regulation, and the motion was carried. Referring to the Alain Highways Board and the petrol tax, Air Ansell said that they had a big fight over the petrol tax, but the Prime Alinister had promised the tax would be allocated in proportion to the number of vehicles in each Island. Air H. Al. Ansell said that there was more than a hint that a certain Department was prepared to overrule the Prime Alinister, and that must be guarded against, as it would affect all the motorists of the South Island and the public generally.
