'During September, 18 births, 8 deaths and 7 marriages were registered in Greymouth. The figures for the corresponding period last year were: — Births 36, deaths 13, marriages 6. The totals for the past quarter were: — Births 63, deaths. 35, marriages by the Registrar 6, compared with births 80, deaths 36, and marriages by Registrar 4, for the corresponding period in 1927. CUSTOMS REVENUE. The revenue received at the Greymouth Customs House for September was £2957 8s Id, as compared with £4155 2s 6d for the corresponding period in 1927. RAINFALL. • , • During the month of September the total rainfall recorded was 12.12 inches, which fell on twenty-six days. The maximum fall was 1.63 inches on September’ 22. During the corresponding period in 1927 rain fell on 17 days, a total fall of 5.25 inches, the maxi-' mum fall being 1.54 inches. The total rainfall for the quarter was 24.21 inches on 60 days, and for the nine months since the beginning of 1928, , 67.31 inches on 149 days. The figures for the corresponding periods in 1927 were: For the quarter 18.23 inches of rain on 49 days; for nine months, 68.78 inches on 136 days. PORT OF GREYMOUTH. During September nineteen steamers having a total net tonnage of 12,303, and one auxiliary schooner of 115 tons net. entered the poTt of Greymouth. During the same period the number cleared outwards was 23 steamers, with a total tonnage of 14,964 net, and two auxiliary schooners with a. net tonnage of 314. ‘

I SUPREME COURT. During the past quarter, two persons were convicted at the Supreme Court at Greymouth on ” criminal charges. One true bill was returned, four divorce petitions filed and grant- < cd, two creditors’ petitions and one debtor’s petition filed in bankruptcy proceedings, two cases were adjudicated, and two discharges granted. Two civil cases were tried, judgment being given for the defendant in each case, the total amounts involved being £l2OO. * ’ ’ MAGISTRATE’S COURT. 11. . • The Greymouth Magistrate’s Court statistics show’ that 28 males were arrested in the Greymouth Police District during the past quarter, in re-, spect to criminal charges, 26 males and 19 females were charged with criminal offences, and five juvenile offenders were dealt with in the Children’s Court. During the same period, 147 plaints were issued and 113 civil cases tried. The amounts claimed totalled £1196/2/8. Judgment was given for £2026/8/8, the total amount recovered being £1097/17/2.
