KUMARA NOTES

Miss N. Alexander, of Wellington, accompanied by her brother, arrived in Kumara on Tuesday evening. Miss Alexander is the guest of Mr and Mrs Theo. Saraty.

As a result of the accident to Mr E. Martyn’s hand at McLean’s sawmill recently, it has been found necessary to amputate one of the fingers. Mr Dave Forster, of Wellington, arrived in Kumara last week, having motored through from Nelson. He left on his return on Wednesday. Mrs Abiss of Hamilton, is on a visit to her father, Mr Thos. Jamieson. • Miss J. Watson, of Dillmanstown, left for Christchurch on Thursday. On Tuesday evening last, some mischievous person, not content with disfiguring the outside of the letter receiving box at Saraty’s corner, introduced some of the offensive matter through the opening, resulting in a number of letters being soiled. Interference, in any .form, with His Majesty’s mail is a serious offence, and this instance has been reported to the police. The death of Mr . John Murdoch, sen., of Kumara, which took place at the Westland Hospital on Wednesday last, removes another of the early pioneers of the Coast. Deceased, who was. born in Scotland 86 years ago, landed in Adelaide in 1866, and coming to New Zealand four years later, settled in Brunner. He then removed to Stafford, where he was engaged contracting. Later on, he left for South Westland, being one of the original settlers at Jackson’s .Bay. After a few years he returned to Stafford and became • manager of Linnimann’s store. When the Rimu rush set in, he set up storekeeping there, eventually going to Ross. In 1910 he went Home, and on his return some twelve months later, settled in Kumara with his daughter. About five years ago, he again visited his relatives in Scotland. The late Mr Murdoch shared in the many experiences common to the pioneer settler, and contributed to the great development of the district. He leaves a daughter, Miss Murdoch (Kumara), and two sons Mr J. A. Murdoch (Hokitika), and Mr John Murdoch (Ross). The funeral look place at Hokitika yesterday. and was largely attended. The Revs. Hayward (Hokitika) and Vickers (Kumara) conducted the funeral service.
