POLICE PROMOTIONS

GREYMOUTH'S NEW INSPECTOR (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, December 10. The Commissioner of Police (Mr W. B. McTlveney) made the following announcement respecting changes in the service: — Inspector J. C. Willis of Hamilton is promoted to the rank of Superintendent. and is assigned to the charge of the Dunedin Police district to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the late Superintendent Murray. Inspector W. Eccles of Gisborne is to have charge of the Hamilton district. Inspector O’Halloran of Greymouth is to take charge at Gisborne. Sub-Inspector J. A. Mathew of Christchurch, is promoted Inspector in charge of Greymouth district. Senior-Sergeant J. Fitzpatrick, of Christchurch, is promoted to the rank of Sub-Inspector and is to remain in that city.

The Inspector at Auckland has been overburdened with work and to give him much-needed relief an Assistant Inspector has been allotted to Auckland Central. Inspeetoi- J. W. Hollis of Whangarei is to fill this position. Inspector Hollis has been for many years in the detective branch as Detective Sergeant, and part of his duties will be to supervise the detective force at Auckland.

Sub-Inspector P. Harvej’, of Wellington is promoted to the rank of Inspector and will take charge of the Whangarei district. Sub-Inspector F. Lewin of Auckland is to go to Nelson to take charge of the Nelson-Marlborough division of the Wellington police district. It is intended later, when necessary provisions have been made, to separate this area from Wellington, and make it a separate police district with an Inspector in charge. Inspeetoi- Lewin will be promoted to this position in due course.

Senior-Sergeant P. J. McCarthy, of Auckland (formerly of Greymouth), is promoted to the rank of Sub-Inspec-tor, with headquarters in that city. Senior-Sergeant J. Lander, of Wellington is also promoted to the rank of Sub-Inspector. He will remain here. Senior-Detective W. E. Lewis, of Christchurch is transferred to the uniform branch with, corresponding designation of Senior-Sergeant and will remain in that city. He is next in order for seniority for commissioned rank and as he has seen nearly all his service in the detective branch it is in the interests of both the force and public that he should have some experience in the uniform branch before being commissioned. This interchange of duties is specially provided for in the regulations. Senior Detective J. Cumming, of Auckland, is also transferred to the uniform branch with corresponding designation of Senior-Sergeant. He will remain in Auckland and the same remarks as are made about Detective Lewis apply equally to him. Senior-Detective A. Hammond, of Auckland is to have charge of the Detective staff there. With the designation of Chief Detective, Sergeant E. J. Whitehouse of Wellington is promoted to the rank of Senior-Sergeant,, with headquarters here. Detective-Sergeant J. Carroll, of Invercargill, is appointed Senior-De-tective in charge of the Detective Office at Christchurch, with designation of Chief Detective. Sergeant J. Fox of Invercargill, is to be Senior-Sergeant there. These arrangements, states the Commissioner, provide for the filling of several vacancies by the best availble officers for the respective positions. Other changes are: Constable D. Clark of Russel to be Sectional Sergt. at Auckland; Constable A. A. Mitchel! of Havelock, to take charge at Russell; Sergeant C. IT. McGlone of Clyde, to replace (Senior Sergeant Scandrett) resigned at Westport; Sergeant J. H. Armstrong, of Wellington, to take charge at Clyde; Constable J. F. Cleary/of Cambridge to be Sergeant, replacing Sergeant Armstrong at Wellington. . The Commissioner has not appointed a commissioned officer to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Superintendent Broberg and intends to undertake the additional cuties himself. ’ , , , The division of the Auckland police district, adds Mr Mcllveney, and the allocation of the duties of commissioned officers there, will be communicated to them at. an early date. It is also intended to make some alteration in the present police boundaries.
