GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

MCINTOSH’S VICTORY. ,

(Per Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, October 22. After last night’s wind and rain, nobody anticipated such a beautiful day as there was for tO-tUy’fl PUy- -ft Was the finest day of the tourney. The final of the Professional Championship was played, and was won by J. Mclntosh, Th© setill-firials of the Amateur Championship were played as well as a four-ball bogey, and a professional consolation bogey. In the semi-fitial of th© Amateur Championship, Loo Qttiii beat K. Tai-eha 3/1, aiid A- puncan beat T. H. Horton 6/4. A four-ball bogey was won by J. H. Drake (Miramar) plus 1 handicap, and J. D. Lawrence (Sumner) who were 11 up in bogey. In the Professional Championship final J. Mclntosh beat A. J. Shaw, 10/9. The Professional Consolation Handicap was won by J. Lam We 6 up. After the magnificent golf he has been playing, it Came 4s a surprise that T. H. Horton should go down to A. Duncan. At lunch time Duncan was 2 up, the outcome of two slips on Horton's part. Starting out for the afternoon round, Duncan stymied Horton, robbing him of a sure win. From this on, Duncan playing very sound golf, never looked like being beaten, and Horton was doing his best to reduce the margin, but the veteran was not to be denied, and caine home, 6/4. Quinn v. Tareha,: This was the beet and longest fight to-day, and lasted up to the 35th green. Kapi started off by winning 4-2 holes. Then Quin by his characteristic determination got busy and-wiped this lead off, and was 1 up at lunch. Playing with confidence he kept Kapi very busy and retained his lead. Kapi’s driving was as good as usual, but he failed in his putting, while Quin was fortunate in being assisted by one stymie. The Shaw Mclntosh match did not produce a good game by any means. It was a runaway. Possibly Shaw was stale from yesterday’s game, but even had he been at his best he could not have beaten Mclntosh, who to-day played the best golf of the meeting. From the word “Go," he made no race of it, returning a 70 card. Out 4, 4,4, 3,5, 3, 4,4, 5, 36; in, 4,4, 3,4, 3,4, 3, 4 5, 34. The only blemish in his play was a6at I he 19th hole. But for McIntosh’s baJ first round in the open he would have been well up. Mclntosh learnt liis golf at Monifieth (Dundee, .Scotland). He has been two' and ahalf years in New Zealand, first as a “pro.’’’ to the HuttJJolf Club. He is now attached to the'’Masterton Club: Arthur Duncan has again come very much into the limelight by his very sound golf. To-day his iron work was perfect, and the only weakness was.in length of the tee shots. However, he played some excellent brassies. It will be a popular win if he triumphs in his 10th championship to-morrow, especially being in his liome town. His many Wellington admirers await with feverish excitement the fate of their hero to-morrow.

T. H,. Horton did not reproduce the game with which he ousted B. V. Wright, His weakness was with his iron clubs and putting, and his opponent did not give him any chances throughout the game. Leo Quin has played very solidly throughout the tournament and deserves his place, but he has something to do to-morrow. Kapi Tareha seems fated not to reach the final in the Amateur. With a shade of luck he plight have to-day. Thp final will be played to-morrow between H. Duncan, playing for his tenth championship, and Leo Quin/ playinng for his second. There should be a close contest.

The four-ball bogey match, J. Drake (Miramar) owing bogey a stroke, and partnered by J. D. Lawrence (Sumner) made the Colonel look humble by beating him, 11 up, a great performance in their handicap.
