HOKITIKA NOTES

HOKITIKA, October 23. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening; present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. W. Jeffries, F. S. Orr, A. R. Elcock, J. King, and J. Lloyd. Apologies were received for the absence of the other councillors. The Railway Traffic Manager wrote agreeing to meet the Council to discuss matters concerning the Council. The District Engineer of Railways wrote asking if a reduction could be made in water supply. The Town Clerk, Greymouth, wrote asking the Council fo support a resolution requesting the Government to alter the conditions so that the State coal mines could be worked full time. —Resolved to support the resolution. 'The Overseer (Mr F. Chesterman) applied for and was granted his annual leave. W. E. Richards asked to have the portion of Rolleston Street opposite his residence drained. —Referred to Public Works Committee to act. The Mayor referred to the suggestion niade to close the Customs office in Hokitika. The Mayor" stated that some £20,000 was passed through the office here, compared with much smaller sums In other places. The matter is being taken up by other local bodies.—lt was resolved that the Council request the retention of the office here. It was. also resolved that Mr Seddon be thanked for his efforts in the matter. The Treasurer reported receipts £lB3O 2s Id, payments £205 Ils 2d; credit balance £1033 16s 3d. Visitors to Grey mouth during the School Jubilee celebrations are loud in their praise of the various functions and the unanimity which has been shown by all classes. The widening of certain portions of Kanieri Lake road and reducing some of the corners will be welcomed by motor men. The road shoqld be piuch improved by the Christmas holidays. The Wakaiti, which went South a week ago on a whitebait expedition, has returned to Hokitika. Mr Cederman was taken ill down there, and had to be removed to Hpkitika by car. He is slightly improved. 'There is a splendid supply of fish for the canning fadtdries, both of which are working at full capacity. The occupation of whitebaiting has considerably relieved the serious position caused by the slackness of sawmill orders. Mr and J)lrs M. Pascoe, of Reefton, were visitors to Hokitika yesterday.
