Hairy May and Fred Smith clash at New Plymouth to-morrow night. it will be interesting to see how the exSydney lad shapes in his second appearance in the Dominion, especially after his display against Fairiiall at A ellington some weeks ago. The Wellington Town Hall was wellfilled on .Monday night to witness the Volaire-Fairhall bout. Describing the contest the “Dominion” says. The contest, which lasted the full fifteen rounds, was a battle of styles. 1 airhall, always aggressive, led from gong to gong ; \ olaire, on the other hand, held oil, relying on his foot work. Fairhall used his left as if he depended on it mainly, but showed, as the contest went on, that he could bring his right.into action with telling ellect, especially in the in-fighting. “Light but often” was his motto; he rarely missed an opportunity to score minor points, while his opponent was wailing an opportunity to drive with his right, 'i'he Frenchman must be counted a plucky boxer, for he took a good deal of punishment, and was as lit in the last as in the first. 'l'he contest was clean-—delightfully clean —and, but for that continuous effective lead of Fairhall’s and the hail of short left jabs that found resting-place on Vclaire’s chin and jaw, the Frenchman would have held his own. Had lie maintained throughout the tactics he adopted in the eighth round of chasing the Australian, and engaging hit i with his right, he would certainly have made the award of the verdict difficult. When it was announced there was great cheering, mingled with some hooting, but. the hoots were in evidint sympathy for the game little Frenchman for having lost in a ding-dong contest between two clever boxers.
