RAILWAY FACILITIES
DEVELOPMENT AT GREYMOUTH.
Gangs of men are. at present busily at work extending the sidings at the Greymouth railway yards, in accordance with the scheme for development to cope with the additional traffic induced by the opening of the Otira tunnel. The sidings between Tatnui Street and the station yards are at present not long enough for requirements, and are accordingly being extended.
The line is to be duplicated as far as Albert Street, and eventually the duplication will be continued to Elmer Lane, where the workshops and running sheds are to be erected. Within a week or two, the second set 'if rails will be laid across the .Tainui Street crossing, a development which will no doubt be followed by a recrudescence of the agitation regarding the dangerous state of the crossing. No information is yet available regarding the installation of the, promised alarm signals. The scheme for future development of the railway facilities also provides for a triple set of rails from the station as far as Albert Street, but the lime for the addition of the third set is at present indefinite, and will depend on requirements.
When the line is duplicated to Elmer Lane, the roadway alongside Petrie Avenue will be enroached upon, but it is pointed out that the Railway Department in doing so will only be resuming its own property, as the Department are. entitled to extend the railway fence for another quarter of a chain towards the road. The next few months will see great changes in the vicinity of the Greymouth railway station, but one of the, most important requirements—a tiew station building—has so far not been provided for by the Government.
