MR. J. B. CONDLTFFE APPOINTED.

Mr. J. B. Condliffe, M.A., who was recently on the West Coast organising a branch of the Workers’ Educational Association, was on Monday appointed by the Board of Governors of Canterbury College to the position of Professor of Economics at Canterbury College as from August Ist. Applications for appointment to the chair were invited from Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and a committee of exports in England, consisting of Professors Sir William Ashley and J. S. Nicholson, and Mr. Mansbridge (founder of the W.E.A.), were asked to recommend three applicants in the order qf their opinion. The recommendation recently received by cable was unanimous in placing Air. J. B. Condliffe first. Air. John Bell Condliffe was born at Melbourne in 1891, and received his secondary education at the West Christchurch District High School. From 19C9 until 1915 he was employed at various ports in the Customs Department, gaining experience of great use in economic studies. His course at Canterbury College in Economics _was unprecedentedly brilliant, and he graduated M. A. willt first class honours, in 1914. After graduation ho was appointed to take charge of the branch of trade and economic enquiries in the office of the N.Z. Government Statistician. Early in 1916 he was selected as full time assistant to the Professor of History and Economics at Canterbury College. Towards the end of 1916 Mr. Condliffe enlisted, and served with the N.Z.E.I*. till his discharge ip February, 1919. After being wounded and gassed at Polygon Wood, he took part in launching the Army education scheme. At the beginning at 1919 he went into' residence at Gonville and Cains College, Coinbridge, and was elected to the Sir Thomas Gresham Studentship for research in Economics Since his return to New Zealand last March, ho has tfiken up extended and more responsible duties at Canterbury Colledge and in connection with the W.°E.
