VALEDICTORY.

MR E. WHITTAKER.

A very pleasing event took place.yesterday .afternoon, when the members of tho Courthouse staff, together with representatives of Law and the Police, met to bid farewell to one of the Court 'officials, who has been transferred to Napier, Mr Whittaker. Mr T. Hutchison, Stipendiary Magistrate, who presided, in a few remarks, went straight to the point, arid expressed the feelings of all present. He said that all the time he had known Mr Whittaker he had found him a thoroughly trustworthy, conscientious, able and , obliging officer, and he hoped he would hav e a long period of health and prosperity, in hii°new sphere of work, assuring him that he left with the cordial good wishes of all. Mr W. J. Joyce, in making Mr Whittaker a presentation of a pocket wallet, enclosing a sum of money, endorsed tho sentiments expressed by the previous speaker, and wished him every success. Other speakers, Senior-Sergeant Simpson, on behalf of the police, and Mr McIndoe, on behalf of the Courthouse staff. endorsed the remarks of those who had spoken before, and wished Mr Whittaker the best of good luck and success. Mr Whittaker, in replying, thanked all verv much for their present, and sail that if he had been at all obliging as an officer, it had not all been on his side The members of the police force and alt others with whom he came in contact had always been most willing to help m every way whenever ho asked, and he . felt 'that "thev had don-, much mor 0 for him than he had done for them.
