THE HAREM SKIRTS.

EXCITEMENT IN MELBOURNE.

[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT.] MELBOURNE, This Day. Crowds in various parts of the city gave two ladies, wearing harem skirts, with a male escort, an uncomplimentary reception. They were several times compelled to refuge in an accompanying taxicab or shops. “DOING THE BLOCK.” Something of a sensation was caused jy the appearance of two attractive young women attired in the fashionable Harem skirts, who did the block in Sydney on a recent Saturday morning. They were accompanied by two male escorts, whilst in the background the bulky form of a blue uniformed policeman loomed ominously. A taxicab was in close attendance on the quartet, and whenever the press of the crowd became too great they retired to the waiting cab and were whirled away, only to return later. The crowd were good-natured, and even if some of the jests cracked at the expense of the ladies were a trifle broad (says the “Daily Telegraph”), the general consensus of opinion seemed to be that the costumes, though strange, were by no means unbecoming, and at any rate a distinct improvement on some of the modes in fashion lately. The two Losses were different. In the one case the so-called skirt seemed to be a pair of trousers, nothing more or less. In the other case the ankle termination of the garment was clipped in with a band, and was only just large mough to let the foot through. The costumes were made of dark blue navy serge, with black satin facings about an inch. wide. The usual walking jacket coats, and white stockings, and patent leather shoes were worn.- Fashionable picture hats and elaborate coiffures completed the costumes.
