THE MAORI ELECTIONS
As was anticipated would be the case, the Maori elections for the four scats in tin* Houf-o of Representatives, held yesterday 5 resulted in the return of a,ll the sitting members. The electorates were very extensive, each island being cut in two, so that the 10 candidates had a wide ran* of country to cover. Thi s was all to the advantage of the members of the late Parliament and the handicap proved too much for their opponents. And who, for instance could hope to prevail against the maim. of Sir Apiraiia N.gata, who U a, member of tip. Coalition Cabinet, or Tan Henare, not to mention T. Kakitanara. T. to Tomo, of Halcombo, is a newcomer as a member, but be made good and has bis reward in re-elect ion. Thus with these members returned, all four Conlitiooisits, the Government starts to-day’s- elections with eight .supporters already returned, adding the four Europeans who were not. opposed. That is a good handicap for 30 ccats.
