Claiming that the film version of “The Merry Widow” held his Royal family up to contempt, Prince Danillo of Montenegro sued the producing compapy for £4OOO damages. Counsel declared that the picture transformed the story of the Merry Widow for at Puritan comedy into a document directly applying to the principality of Montenegro, the character of the Prince being revealed as coarse and brutal in a light not shown in the, musical comedy version.
