MASS OF EXPIATION
RUSSIA’S PERSECUTIONS GREAT CATHOLIC CEREMONY (Aust. and N.Z. Cable) [ (Received March 20, 2 p.m.) Vatican City, March 10. Huge, crowds at, St- Peter’s attended Mass of Expiation offered by flic Pope at, the Apostles’ tenth for the profanation of the church, and offences against the majesty of God in Russia. As the Mass started the hells of every church in Italy tolled their prptest to thp Soviet. Pope Pius was borne t° the cathedral on a raised chair carried by six men, preceded by clergy, officials, and members pf fhe, College of Cardinals.
His arrival was announced by blasts cn silver trumpets. After the mass was over the sacred relics were exposed, including pieces of the true cross, the veil of St. Veronica and the spear with which the side of Christ was pierced at the cross.
