After examining 210,000 persons, principally natives in Australia and Papua, the Federal Department of Health has demonstrated that hookworm does not exist in Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and West Australia, with the exception of the north-weast. The disease is found to be limited in extent to the coastal regious of Queensland, North Australia, and the north coast of New South Wales. Of the persons examined in New Guinea 74 per cent had the disease, and 59 per cent in Papua. In Queensland the figures varied down to 4 per cent.
