WHARFIE GETS £2500 DAMAGES. Christchurch, September 7. After four days' hearing in the Supreme Court, the case in which David John Miller, wharf labourer, Lyttelton, claimed from the Union Steam Ship Co. the sum of £2500 as general damages and £52 10s as special damages and hospital expenses to the date of tho issue of the writ for injuries, the result of an accident on the steamI ship Tarawera at Lyttelton on the j night of January 17, 1917, was concluded this afternoon. The jury returned a verdict for the full amount claimed, but judgment was not entered up pending argument on important legal points raised. LADIES' HOCKEY MATCH. Wellington, September 7. In the ladies' hockey tourney, Canterbury had an easy win over Wairarapa by 8 goals to 1. Manawatu defeated Wellington, in a fast exciting game, by 4 to 2. BOY THIEVES SENTENCED. Dunedin. September 7. William Frank Jones and Frank Rowliugson, who stole articles from hotels and boarding houses, camo up for sentence in the Supreme Court. Jones (four charges.) received twelve months and Rowlmgson agianst whom there were eleven charges, including false pretences, received in all 33 months. Both were ordered to be detained for reformative treatment. Robert Hagen, on two charges of receiving stolen property, was sentenced to twelve months. SMALL STRIKE. Wellington, September 7. Another strike is threatened, this time in the mosquito fleet. The dispute is over the interpretation of an agreement as to tho number of men to compose a watch. The men of three boats havo sent in notice, and will not sail to-night. THE OPOURIABANDONED. Greymouth, September 7. The Opouri has been abandoned to the underwriters. Salvage of tho cargo is proceeding. ; BETTING CASES. | Wellington, September 7. The hearing was resumed in the | Magistrate's Court of the charges 1 against Eraser, Hodges, Fitzgerald, and McWilliams in connection with betting transactions. At the close of the case for the Crown Fraser pleaded i not guilty and was committed for • trial. The information against Hodges was dismissed, and as Fitzgerald and McWilliams decided to tender evi- > dence, their cases were adjourned unI Tuesday.

THE C 2 MEDICAL BOARD. PERSONNEL ANNOUNCED. Wellington, Sept. 7. Surgeon-General Henderson states that the following have been appointed a C 2 Examining Board: Lieut.-Co-lonel Andrews (principal medical officer, Trentham), President; Captain Hogg (TrenthamCamp), Captain Mercer (Featherston Camp), and Major Blacket (combatant officer). There will only be ono Board for the Dominion, and it will work from Auckland southward through "the country.
