The Captain Cain Case

The trial of Thomas Hall for murder commenced at the Supreme Court this morning. Chiof Justice Wray. of .South Australia, was accommodated with a seat on the bench. Tho approaches to the court were crowded with persons auxious to obtain a ghinp.se of the prisoner, but owing to the limited accommodation very low gamed admittance. Ten of the special jurors applied to be excused, and seven were let off. Mr Hargitt. assisted by Mr Wright, of Timaru, defended. The Crown and prisoner «aoh challenged three jurors. Mr Haggitt, in opening, said it would be proved that Cain was poisoned, and the evidence would point to Hall as having had frequent opportunities of administering poison, and that it would have been of advantage to him to remove Cain. It would be shown what he had to gain by Cain's death, and that he had a motive for it.
There was nothing fresh in the evidence adduced to-day, in fact it was more brief than at the preliminary inquiry. The cross-examiuation was also brief.
