Activities of the Women’s Institute.

THE BUCKLAND BRANCH GROUP MEETING DISCUSSED PARCELS SENT TO SOLDIERS The April meeting of the Buckland Women’s Institute was held at the local hall, Mrs C. Butcher presiding over a fair attendance. Several apologies for unavoidable absence were received. A preliminary talk about mailers pertaining to I lie group meeting to be held on June ('» look place. final arrangemenls will be made at the May meet ing. Five parcels were sent for soldiers. Owing to Hie scarcity of wool only a Te helmets have been made so far. Many knitters are anxious lo underlake such work.

Suggestions for the new year’s programme were received.

The roll call in which each member bad to do. something, caused some amusement. Incidentally a few lines were imposed, those penalised paying ■q smilingly. -A “bring and buy” table did very good business.

Competitions resulted: A handsewn hem, Mrs Danes J, Mrs Prat-ten 2; howl of marigolds, Mrs Lewis J, Mrs' Butcher 2: vase of pom dahlias, Mrs Butcher 1 : specimen bloom, Mrs Butcher 1 and 2-; howl of autumn berries and foliage Mrs Butcher I, Mrs Danes 2. At the May meeting members, other than office bearers, will take charge of the afternoon. Mesdames Schofield, senior, and Pratten were thanked. ' v

The garden circle met at Mrs T. Holland's residence when a pleasant afternoon was spent. A number of members came laden with flowers showing that their gardens are improving. A suggestion - was made that the garden circle might help lo improve the outside of Ihe Buckland hall. This was agreed to subject to tlie approval of the Welfare League. Mrs Graham gave valuable help regarding planting operations. Mrs Graham, on behalf of members, presented Miss Holland, who is about to he married, with a crystal vase with best wishes for her future happiness. Miss Holland suitably thanked the ladies who had given her a genuine surprise. Mrs Graham thanked Mrs Holland for her hospitality, after which members spent some time in the trim and tidy garden.
