Lawn Tennis in the Franklin District

ASSOCIATION MATCHES SEMI-FINALS AND FINALS TE TORO BEAT PUKEKOHE The Franklin Lawn Tennis Association’s inter-club competitions which are nearing finality were advanced a stage on Saturday. In the final of the Reserve A grade Te Toro proved too good for Pukekohe, winning a well contested match by 7 to 3. The match was played on the Mauku courts and Te Toro players appeared., to adapt themselves to the strange conditions better than Pukekohe. H. Keane played well to beat D. Anderson after losing the first set, but F. Lawson was too good for N. Garland, being the only one on his side to win a single. •' By winning both the men’s doubles Pukekohe showed a superiority on the men’s side.

Te Toro ladies, however, proved their all-round superiority by winning all their matches including the combined doubles. This win completes a very successful season for Te Toro club. They are a club probably the furthest from headquarters of any in the association. . Their first team w r ent through the season without being beaten, playing a double series of matches in No. 2 group of the Reserve A grade. Their second team won the honours in the No. 1 group B grade, being beaten by Mauku in the first semi-final last Saturday. The C grade championship was won by Olaua, who beat Mangatawhiri by 9 to 5 on the Pukekohe courts. This match was very well contested right through, both teams being keen to win. Otaua proved somewhat superior in the men’s division having strengthened their team with one or two players who might get a place in their first team. Mangatawhiri have a lot of good material and if they keep their team together they should get their names on the Massey cup before long. In the B grade two semi-final matches were played.
