THE NEEDY.

ALLEVIATION OF DISTRESS. RELIEF COMMITTEE'S ACTIVITIES. With a view to co-ordinating relief work in the Franklin county, Pukekohe borough and adjacent town board areas a special committee has been formed, the personnel of which is: Mrs J. H. Wyatt, president, Franklin Welfare League; Messrs G. T. Parvin, district representative, Auckland Hospital Board; J. F. McArthur, engineer, Franklin County Council; A. Woolsey, junr., president, Mauku Farmers' Union; S. P. Day, president, Franklin Returned Soldiers' Association; and M. S. Campbell, President, Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce.

An inspection of the numerous camps has already been made, and a careful investigation of cases of distress, throughout the area is being prosecuted. An endeavour is being made to eliminate overlapping of relief schemes and to regulate, as far as possible, the supply of necessities and comforts to distressed families.

It is hoped to provide food, clothing and firing to necessitous cases, and the kindred societies are co-oper-ating in a splendid effort to assist in alleviating to a certain extent the lot of fellow citizens, more unfortunately situated. While cash donations would materially help the funds at the disposal of the committee, it is realised that all cannot help in this manner. However, supplies of meat, vegetables, clothing and boots are urgently needed. Cooking utensils, such as dixies and camp ovens would be welcome at the camps—also lamps, old gramophones and records, games and reading matter will help to while away the long evening hours. An effort is being made to arrange for a steady supply of vegetables, etc. and same may be left at tllO FraflKlin County Council chambers. It is desired that parcels of clothing be left at the depot of the Welfare League, Franklin Electric Power Building, King Street, Pukekohe, for sorting and distribution.

People who are prepared to assist, but cannot deliver their contributions, are asked to ring Mr Parvin, telephone 1.1.35, or any other member of the committee, and the goods will be collected.

The committee desire to emphasise the fact that all cases of local distress, and there are many, will first receive attention, but it will be appreciated that it is only humane to help all in need in the district, according to the need and to the supplies available.

The warm thanks to those who are already assisting is acknowledged and the generous response of the public is gratefully anticipated.
