WORLD TRUST ALLEGED AGAINST MUSICIANS’ ORGANISATION

WASHINGTON, June 23. ■ The Attorney-General, Mr Tom Clark, filed to-day an anti-trust suit, against the American Society of Composers-, Authors, and Publishers. Iniown as A.S.C.A.P., charging it with engaging in an international cartel and conspiring to deprive domestic and foreign music lovers of music. Twentyfive foreign musical societies in Canada, Australia, and several European and South American countries were named as co-defendants. • Mr Clark charged the organisation with' engaging in-a world cartel and conspiracy to monopolise, musical performing rights in violation of the antitrust law. He added that it was apparent from F. 8.1.. investigations that the cartel prevented radio _ stations. theatres, etc., from obtaining music except through A.S.C.A.P.. and prevented American , composers and authors who ’were not members of A.S.C.A.P. from having their music played abroad. A.S.C.A.P. had a membership of 225 music publishers and 1,675 authors and composers. Its income iir 1946 was 11,000,000 dollars.
