Bowling: Valley Annexes Adess Shield

[By Measurer.] That it does not pay to play the prohet is evidenced .by the writer’s apparently poor judgment in endeavouring to follow form for Saturday’s continuation of the Adess Shield games. Both Taieri and Kaikorai,,. who looked so likely the previous week, failed to reproduce their form and had to succumb in the mornilig game to two fine drawing combinations in Anderson’s Bay . and Northeast Valley respectively. Neither of .the winning teams was.called upoli for aggressive tactics, as their drawing was so steady and accurate. The two front men in’ both .winning teams generally outplayed their , opposite numbers and made it easy for their skips. E. C. Adams (Taieri) had somewhat of a day off. as he was not playing, nearly as 'Veil as the previous week. ' The final game between Anderson’s Bay and North-east Valley was very one-sided, as Valley got away to a flying start and were never headed. The Valley lead, W. Williamson, played a fine game, as did his skip, G. Cook, the latter in particular drawing some remarkably fine shots and having practically no occasion flo resort to the forceful game which he can also play if required. Valley thus took the shield for 1947, exactly 10 years after its previous only> win in the competition. It is interesting to note that the skip of the Bay team (D. Gardner), the runners-up. was the third of the winning Dunedin team in 1945. Leads and Seconds. [ This tournament was satisfactorily concluded on Saturday last in brilliant summer conditions, although the last bowl was not rolled until about 6.55 p.m., the final game beginning shortly after 4 p.m. The concluding rounds were full of interest, .as, apart from the keen, drawing usually associated with competitors in this event, the thirds and skips showed no hesitation about adopting aggressive tactics when the occasion warranted. In the first semifinal games, Rutherford (Caversham) defeated Scott (Balriiacewen) by 1310, after establishing dn early lead. The Balmacewen team had two easy wins in the morning, but did not play the same confident game in the afternoon. In the other semi-final (B. Waller (Kaikorai) and W. A: Mitson (Kaituna) tied on the last end, and the replay netted Waller two shots. Waller jumped to 10-0 in the first three ends of the final game and was never headed, commencing the twentyfirst end 8 up. The Kaikorai team produced tactics and plav throughout the tournament worthy of much more experienced players.
