SHIPWRECK MESSAGE
BOTTLE FOUND ON BEACH (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 8. Scrawled unevenly on a small slip of cardboard, the following message was found in a ship’s beer bottle on the beach at Islington Bay, Motutapu, in the Hauraki Gulf:—“ 1940. Shipwreck. Will made. 29 Oxford street, Sydney, Australia. M. Johnson.” The cardboard is apparently part of a cigarette packet. The cork of the bottle had nearly rotted away. Whether the message is a hoax or an echo of a war-time tragedy may be known following inquiries now being made in Australia. >
