COAL POLICY
GOVERNMENT WILL TAKE MINES DIRECT STATEMENT BY MINISTER (P.A ) WELLINGTON, January 8. “ Now that the Government’s programme has been endorsed by “ the electors of New Zealand, it will give effect to its policy of nationalising the coal mines and the coal deposits.” This statement was made in an interview by the Minister of .. Mines, Mr McLagan. Such nationalisation, he said, was announced as part of the Government’s policy at the recent General Election, and the Government intends seeking information from the British Government concerning its procedure adopted in negotiating the nationalisation of the mines there. Mr McLagan said the British Government seemed to have made a reasonably good bargain) and he would like to know something of the details. In New Zealand, he said, the State already owned a substantial proportion of the country’s coal industry.
