ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
YOUNG CHILD DROWNED. Donald Mitchell, aged four, the son of Mr and Mrs F. A. Mitchell, was drowned in the Wairoa River yesterday. The boy was playing with a-num-ber of other children, when he wandered off and was not missedi Apparently he endeavoured to reach the river bed, but when climbing down the steep bank slipped and fell into the stream below. Not until an elderly Maori went to use his boat was the accident discovered, the body being found in two feet of water. Efforts were made to rescuscitate the lad for some time, but these failed. An inquest, was held later before Mr V. E. Winter (coroner), who returned a verdict of “ accidentally drowned.”— Wairba Association message.
