Fluff, a Persian cat, who for the past 11 years has lived in Invercargill, is missing and is believed to be dead. Recently Fluff gave birth to her 128th

- ; tten. some of which were Persians, like their mother, and others “ just cats.” She is survived by probably hundreds of .descendants.

A lecturette session consisting of several talks given entirely in Esperanto was a feature of the final day of the New Zealand National Esperanto Congress, which was held in Auckland last week. Delegates gave practical examples of the flexibility of the language by holding ..several sessions in which Esperanto only was spoken, and also held a concert in which the majority of the items were presented in Esperanto. Fourteen graduates of the Central Medical School at Fiji for 1946 received their native medical practitioners’ certificates at a recent ceremony on the island, according to a. report in the ‘ Fiji Times.’ Five of them were Fijians, three were Solomon Islanders, one was a Fiji-born Indian, and the remaining five came from Tonga, the Ellice Islands, American Samoa; the Cook Islands, and the New Hebrides. The certificates were presented by Dr J. C. R. Buchanan, In-spector-General, South Pacific, Health Service, and Director of Medical Services, Fiji.

Twelve applications have been received for the position of director of cancer research at Dunedin, and these are now being considered by a special committee. The recommendations_ will be forwarded to the Central Committee in Wellington, and it is expected that the name of the selected candidate will be .announced shortly. All the applications came from Great Britain.

By a coincidence the railways benefited considerably last evening in clearing the main line following ,the crossing collision at Warrington. When the train was moved back from the wreckage of a heavy motor truck, the crew, augmented by a few, local surfacemen, were faced with a big lifting job which would have taken a considerable time to complete. The problem was solved within five minutes when Messrs Reilly’s breakdown service van, returning from a call further north, arrived at the scene. By cutting a fence the lifting gear was able to be employed, and the wreckage was swung clear of the track._ enabling the train to proceed with a minimum delay. At 7.56 this morning the Central Fire Brigade was called to a chimney fire in Alfred street, St. Hilda.
