DEFENCE OF EIRE
NAVY TO BE ESTABLISHED DUBLIN, November 20. The Minister of Detfence, Mr Oscar Traynor, announced in the Dail that Eire intended to create its own navy. Three corvettes had been purchased from Britain, and three others would shortly be acquired. An experienced officer has been chosen to command the service. The Minister said that the officer was born in America, but he was not sure of his nationality. The Press Association says that the officer is believed to be Lieutenant-commander Jerome, D. 5.0., who recently retired from the Royal Navy. Mr Traynor also stated that no steps had been taken to correlate Eire defences with those of any other country..
