FRIENDLY SOCIETIES

DRUIDISM. A large number of visitors from tlio lodges of Nos. i and 2 districts attended tiie fortnightly meeting of the Lily of tiie Valley Lodge lielu ill tlio foresters’ Hall, Albany street. Arch Druid A. It. Lankin welcomed Grand President lire. Tyrrell and grand lodge officers on an official visit. After the meeting, a friendly game of cards was enjoyed by all. A.D. Bro. H. J. Smaill presided over a good attendance of members and visitors at the fortnightly meeting of Bay Lodge No. 18. The lodge decided to have Past Grand President Bro. J. M. The quarterly meeting of Good Intent Lodge No. .8 was held in the Oddffellows’ Hall, Mosgiel, and was presided over ,by Arch Druid Bro. A. Thomson. ’ The attendance ,at this meeting:was better than it had been for some time. Bro. J. L. Dickinson attended officially and received the usual Druidic welcome from the officers and members of Good Intent Lodge. Bro. T. Smeaton reported that there was a lot of sickness among the members, and. that he was kept busy visiting them' and paying their sick pay. The inward correspondence included an invitation from Lily of the, Valley Lodge, which was . received and accepted. Several, officers decided to attend. Bro. Dickinson installed the remainder of the elected officers wlio were not present on installation night, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A letter ‘was received from Grand Secretary Bro. A. It. Rankin stating,that the Grand President, Bro. H. A. Tyrrell, and several members of the Board of Management will visit the lodge on its nest meeting night, and requested a good muster of memhers on that occasion. FORESTERS. A meeting of j representatives from the various districts of the A.O.F. was held in Wellington last week to establish the Dominion Advisory Council for New Zealand. The constitution ,and rules were drawn up and approved, and the following officers were elected: —President, Bro. 0. Jacobsen, Christchurch; vice-president, Bro. J, K. Maefie, Otago y secretary, Bro, L. J. Retalliek, Wellington. It was decided to Hold the annual meeting at Christchurch in April next. The visitors were, the guests of the Wellington District Executive. Court Woodlands Pride had an excellent attendance at its • last meeting. The woodwards reported on the sick visited during the past fortnight, and a large number of sick-pay claims were passed for payment. There were two nominations for membership. \ After the .meeting the C.R. welcomed Arch Druid Bro. R. Johns and officers and members of several Druid lodges, who spent a Very enjoyable evening in dancing.

Court Excelsior, No. 6,128, held a largely-attended meeting' ni t.he court, room,' Mornington, when C.R. Bro. ; John Beaton presided. Several visitors and friends were welcomed, and I. Bro. A. W. Jones replied to the welcome. Progressive . euchre was played, and Mrs Stephenson won the; ladies* prize; "Mrs Patton being runner-up. Bros. T. A. Smith and E. J. Patton tiedfor, the men’s' prize. ; One candidate whs"'proposed, for 1 lie next meeting. Arrangements are how complete for the 'juvenile anniversary next week, while entries are being received for the James Macfie Memorial Scholarship examination. The rc-tiro-iiient of 'Bro. L. J. Xoilson, Port Chalmers. from the district executive was fittingly celebrated by a pleasing function and presentation, members of Court Excelsior being present. Court Excelsior’s team for the 500 shield qualified lor the semi-final section, while the bowls , team were extended by Court Enterprise -in a special challenge match. ; Court Pride of Green Island held its usual fortnightly meeting, a good attendance of members greeting tho O. Bro. J. H. Penson. The usual sick claims were dealt with, and sick allowances arranged to members. A large amount of correspondence received due consideration. An official visit was received from 1.P.D.C.R.. Sister E. Pratt, of the Canterbury United* District. Also present were IP.D.C.R. Bro, A. W. Jones and P. Bro. J. ,H. Wilson. Sister Pratt has held the unique position of' being a district officer in Canterbury and gave an interesting and helpful address on. the working of the order and the friendly society movement in general Nominations for all the offices were received, and the election and installation will be held next meeting. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE. The- committee held a meeting in the A.O.F. district office, and there was a good attendance' of various societies. There will be a flag’ “ 500 ” night early in October in the Unitv Hall, Kensington. The . question of visiting lodges with small attendances was discussed, and it was decided to visit one or two in. the hear future. DANCE COMMITTEE. The combined friendly societies’ weekly dance still continues to draw a good 'crowd The elimination waltz is proving very popular, and last week’s winners of the special prize were Mr D. Stokes and partner. The lucky spot was -won by Mr and Mrs Deihl, and Airs D. Landreth won the.ladies’ hose.
