POLICE COURT

TUESDAY, APRIL 16. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew S.M.) ALLEGED ASSAULT. Two young men, Robert Watson Lowther, aged 21 years, and John Watson Lowther, aged 18 years, were each charged with asaulting Leslie Allan Rosie on April 15, and stealing one packet of cigarettes, the property of Rosie. On the application of the counsel, Mr J. D. Neill and Mr W. McAlevey, the accused were remanded until Thursday, bail being allowed in each case at £2O in their own recognisances. UNLAWFULLY ON PREMISES. A young man, aged 27 years, whose name was suppressed, was charged with being found on April 15, without lawful excuse, but in circumstances that did not disclose the commission of, or the intention to commit an offence, in the Municipal Baths. Senior-sergeant D. Vaughan said that the accused had attended the baths, entering by the front door, on several occasions during the women's sessions, and had sat in the gallery upstairs. He had been refused admittance and had gained entrance through the boiler room. On Monday last he was found in the men's convenience peering into the women's dressing room through a hole in the wall. Mc C. J. L. White, who represented the accused, said that he was a man who suffered from nerves and •was in need of medical attention. His life was lonely, and since his. return with the first 'furlough draft from service with the first echelon in Crete and Syria, he had, made several efforts to rehabilitate himself, but his state of health had not been sound and he had broken down completely. The Magistrate said that he had at first intended to inflict a stiff penalty, but in view of the circumstances which had been outlined, he would place the accused on probation for one year, in order that he may be under supervision. He made an order for supression of the name.
