ROWING FIASCO
INTERPROVINGIAL EIGHTS
(P.A.) . WELLINGTON, Mar. 23. In spite of perfect conditions on the harbour, poor steering was responsible for the New Zealand interprovincial eight-oared rowing championship, held on the Oriental Bay to-day, being almost a fiasco. The crews from Marlborough, Wellington, Canterbury, and Wanganui started well, but three boats were involved in tanglements and collisions before any distance was rowed. Wanganui, the only boat'not affected, came home an ,easy winner, but Wellington protested, and the umpire decided that the race should be rerowed. The Canterbury crew, which was disqualified, but was given an opportunity to participate in the rerow, and Marlborough both refused to. turn out again, and in the afternoon Wanganui and Wellington fought out the race, the latter winning by the official margin of 2ft. The results of other races were as follows: — Welter-weight Junior Eight.—Wanganui Union 1, Wellington 2, Aramoho 3, Petone 4. Won by a length and a-half. Junior Eights.—Wanganui Union 1, Canterbury 2, Star 3. Won by three lengths.
