NO UMPIRE'S LAUNCH
COMMITTEE CENSURED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 25. "The eight-oar race on Saturday was a great disappointment to the oarsmen," said Mr A. A. Whiting, president of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association. " Why didn't they have an umpire following in a launch to warn the crews off when they were getting close? " he asked. " If, after a warning, they had still steered the wrong course he could have disqualified them there and then. You can't umpire a race from the bank, particularly on a course like Oriental Bay. The committee which ran the regatta must be held responsible for failing to have a launch to do the job properly."
