AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE The monthly meeting of the Automobile Association (Otago) was held last night. Mr G. W. Ferens was in the chair, and other members present were Messrs P. W. Breen. W. A. Jenkins, J. L. Passmore. G. G. Adess, G. T. Anderson, H. Archbold, A. E. Bingham, J. Caldwell, GEt. A. Douglas, D. Forsyth. W. J. Mclnnes, B. M. Rodger, J. G. Sounees. R. O. Talbot, and G. T. Thorn. , TYRE SITUATION. A copy of a letter from the Minister of Supply, Hon. D. G. Sullivan, was forwarded by the secretary of the South Island Motor Union in reference to the tyre situation. The letter stated: —'' We cannot expect any relief in the immediate future, and it may possibly be some time before tyre supplies will be coming forward in quantities sufficient to alleviate the present difficult position. The difficulties in regard to shipping were correctly stated in a previous letter in that the main source of supply was Australia, and the shipping position from there had been, and was still, a most difficult one." It was the Minister's intention to take all steps possible to secure the maximum quantity of supplies as soon as possible with < a view to reverting to normal trading conditions. In view of other statements reported in the Press and authoritative statements made by the Minister of Supply in Australia, Senator Ashley, which conflicted with statements made by the Minister of Supply here, it was decided to draw the attention of the South Island Motor Union and to ask for further clarification. CAMPING GROUNDS/ In the Camp Committee's renort a letter was received from Mr C. _L. Veint stating that he was establishing a motor camping ground at Paradise, and asking for advice. The Arrow Borough Council applied for a grant. Members spoke enthusiastically of the new camping area, and stated that the local people had done a good deal of work themselves and had already spent a good deal of money. It was decided to make a grant of £SO under the usual conditions. The Pounawea Domain Board had •been written a letter of complaint in regard to that camo. ' Various improvements to Tahuna Motor Camp were approved, including the purchase of more huts. Some concern was expressed that some huts were being let for lengthy periods. to people who were not bona fide campers. At the executive meeting a letter from the Brighton Domain Board, enclosing a letter from the Minister of Defence (Mr Jones), in regard to the proposal to start a motor camp on the Domain was received. The Minister of Lands (Mr Skinner), having been consulted, reiterated previous reasons for refusal, and suggested an alternative site, in the Taieri Mouth direction: Members of the executive considered that this site was too exposed. It was decided to institute enquiries as to what was done with money collected from motorists by the (Brighton Domain Board. The Domain was in an unkempt condition. GENERAL. Tie Arrow Borough Council requested support for the declaration of the highway through Arrowtown as a State highway.—As it has been a fixed policy to have existing highways improved first, it was decided to reply to xhe effect that support could not be given at the moment, and suggesting that the council bring up the matter in a year's time.
