WATER CONSUMPTION. "' The town clerk (Mr 11. J. K. Gillies) reported that the water consumption of the borough for the quarter ended September 30, 19-15, was 22,199,000

gallons, of which 10,135,000 gallons were used for domestic purposes and 12,064,000 gallons for industrial purposes. Over the past five years the population of the borough had been estimated at 2,500. and the. daily consumption per head had been based rm that figure. Using the same basis for this quarter, the'"' consumption would be 45.04 gallons a head a day. [t was revealed by the census, however, that the population of Green

Island was 2,700, and when the daily consumption was based on that figure it was reduced, to 41.7 gallons.—The report was received. AERODROME SITE.' The Mayor reported that he and Cr McAhan had represented the council when an inspection had been made of the proposed aerodrome site on the Green Island swamp. Other bodies represented were the Otago Harbour Board, the Otago Expansion League, the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce, the Dunedin Development Council, and the Otago Aero Club, and Flight-lieutenant E. Froggatt, a former instructor at the Taieri aerodrome, had also been present. Some of the representatives, he said, favoured the proposal to drain the swamp and establish an aerodrome' there, but Mr H. M. Mackay had favoured the southern endowment. It had been stated by a delegate to the recent Local Bodies' Conference that he had flown from Invercargill to the Taieri aerodrome in 30 minutes and it had taken him 35 minutes to travel from the aerodrome to Dunedin. It was understood that engineers were to view the proposed site at Green Island and report to the Government on its possibilities as an aerodrome. " The more I see it, the more I like it," stated Cr McAhan of the swamp area. area under discussion was a large on'e and it was handy to town. The speaker understood- the attitude of the Harbour Board in wishing to keep the southern' endowment for itself; in addition, it was situated in a densely-populated area, while the proposed site at Green Island was not. The latter was owned by the City Council. A considerable amount of work would have to be done in the way of drainage if the swamp were to be used, but he was convinced it could be d,<>ne. The mayor and Cr McAhan were thanked for their report.
