PATIENTS AND PRISONERS

AID SCCIETY MEETS The monthly meeting of the Patients and Prisoners' Aid Society held yesterday was attended by the Hoii. W. Dowuie Stewart (chairman), Mrs C. 0. M'athias, Miss Dowuie Stewart. Messrs J. Dey, J. Taylor. H. L. Gibson, E. North, and C. J. Wood. Mr A. Stevens, the society's agent, submitted the following report for the month of October : Prison Work.—The society had kept in touch with the assistant gaoler, and matters requiring help had received attention. Several cases of prisoners' dependents had. been given supplementary assistance. Mental Hospital.—Visits had been made to the patients at Seacliff, Orokonui Home, and Cherry Farm, and any literature available had been supplied. There was a constant need for a sup-1 ply of literature. Applications for comforts allowances for a number of i patients had been completed, and re- j newals.made out and handed in to the I Social Security Department. A patient released on probation had been equipped and placed in. employments Sunday church services conducted at' Seacliff and Orokonui Home had been j well-attended, 'and! always seemed to be appreciated by the patients. Wakari Hospital and Pleasant Valley Sanatorium.—The patients had been v.sited during the month and literature and fruit supplied. Assistance had been given to some of the discharged patients- and extras hud been made available for patients' dependents ! in need of this help. The visits of the

Hospital occupational therapist, Miss Walden, were appreciated. Dunedin Hospital'.—A certain amount of visiting had been clone on two afternoons each week. From tli'e female wards seven patients had been transferred to the society's convalescent home at Warrington. Two choirs had heen in attendance each Sunday evening, and bright song services conducted in all the wards. The following choirs assisted in . October :—Evancelical Union, First Church. Knox Church Junior, St. Andrew Street Church of Christ. St. Stephen's, Hanover St'reet Baptist, and choirs conducted by Miss Barron and Mr S. Lawn. James Powell Convalescent Home.— The home has been kept full throughout the month and good progress had been made by the patients. Fifteen patients had been admitted in October. The grounds round the home were in good order, and the gardener had been kept busy in the vegetable garden. Country Collection.-—The collecting had been done in the Oamaru district, and there had been a good response from regular subscribers, and some new subscribers had been added to the list.
