SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED
A social evening was held in the Wakari School Hall last Saturday, when a number of soldiers from overseas were given a welcome home. Mr G. Swan, on behalf of the Wakari Soldiers' Entertainment Committee and the residents, expressed pleasure in the return of the men, and presented each soldier with an illuminated address as a token of appreciation from the community. Mr Dickie, of the Wakari Presbyterian Church, also spoke. The soldiers present were Messrs Spillane, Beath, Topping, Hobson, Thompson, Venables, Cameron, McPherson, Emmerson, Manning, and Payton. Private McPherson replied on behalf of the soldiers. Items were given by Miss P. Spence and Miss Irene Joyce (dance duo), Miss Eileen Bevin and Miss Lola Robertson (sword dance), Mrs Kirk-Burnnand and Mr Fred Joyce supplied the music for the dancing, and Sergeant J. McVean played for the national dancing and extras.
