RAILWAY OFFICERS
DISTRICT TRAFFIC MANAGER RETIRES Having completed nearly 43 years of continuous service with the New Zea!and Railway Department, Mr J. A. Stirling, district traffic manager at Dunedin, will retire on Saturday. He joined the service as a cadet at Christchurch in 1901, and from 1903 until 1930 was stationed in various Otago centres, including Port Chalmers, Hampden, Burkes, Burnside, Seacliff, Abbotsford, and Mosgiel. He joined the district traffic manager's staff in 1923. In 1930 he was appointed chief clerk in the transport office at Wellington. He returned to Dunedin as district traffic manager in 1938. He has been a popular officer, and his relations with the staff and public have been most cordial. He will be given an official farewell tomorrow afternoon.
Mr W. M. Mac Kay, who has been assistant district traffic manager at Dunedin since last October, will succeed Mr Stirling. He joined the service in 1906, and has been stationed in many centres, including Dunedin, Clyde, and Wingatui. He served overseas for four years in the last war.
