MOSGIEL FIRE BRIGADE

ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Mosgiel Volunteer Fire Brigade was well attended by members and supporters. Those present included the chairman of the Dunedin Metropolitan Brigade (Mr W. W. Calender) and three members of the board, the Mayor of Mosgiel (Mr W. P. Hartstonge), and two members of the Borough Council In addition to the business meeting, a social hour was spent, when an appropriate toast list was honoured and items were given by Messrs G. Gibson (songs), E. Ken (cornet solos), B. Watt (violin solos). Mi C. Pilling was the accompanist. Moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, the chairman (Superintendent J. White) said that the roll book showed an active membership of 13. There had been 30 musters during tho year. The following attendance honours had been presented during the year:— Fireman H. Smith, 2 years' bar, completing 21 years; Fireman J. Wishart, 2 years' bar, completing 15 years; Motorman R. Campbell, 2 years' bar, completing 13 years; Fireman J. Craigie, 2 years' bar, completing 9 years; Fireman L. Scurr, 3 yearn 1 certificate; and the following would be presented that evening:—District Officer J. White, 2 years' gold bar, completing 3.1 years' service; Deputy-officer J. S'meaton, 9. years' gold bar, completing 35 years' service; Fireman J. Mitchell, 2 years' gold bar, completing 37 gears' service; Fireman J. Aitken, 2 years' gold bar, completing .35 years' service; Fireman T. ilrving, 2 years' gold bar, completing 33 years' service; Motorman R. Campbell, 2 years' silver bar, completing 15 years', service; Fireman F. Chiles, 3 years' certificate. The annual picture entertainment had realised a credit balance of £33 16s 6d. The proceeds of the annual ball had been handed over to the All Purposes Appeal Fund, and had realised the sum of £52 12s 6d. The brigade mem hers had also assisted the Business Men's Association at its Paddy's market, from which a satisfactory sum was raised for the All Purposes Appeal. The members had now agreed, the Chairman said, to concentrate their efforts on raising moneys towards the Returned Soldiers' Fund, and it was hoped to collect sufficient funds so that every man might receive a gift worthy of the occasion. For this fund a Christmas hamper had realised £3l 13s 6d. Visits had been made to the Taieri aerodrome so that the members might make themselves conversant with the surroundings in the event of a fire call. An invitation had been extended to tho brigades in the Southern Districts Association to hold the conference and deinonstra-* tions in Mosgiel early-next year if suitable arrangements could be made. The brigade equipment at present was the best, since the formation of the brigade, Bnd with the motor engine having been overhauled and repainted, and the issue of new fire tunics, members felt it was worth while being linked up with the Metropolitan Fim Brigade Board.
