RECENT ACTIVITIES A meeting of the committee of the Drisg> edin Amenities Society was held on Mondays afternoon the following being present:— Mr Crosby Morris (in the chair), Mesdamcs H. L. Cook and C. M. Begg, Dr Charles Begg Messrs G. 'Simpson, It. Fountain, James Begg, J. C. Bcgg, H. P, Kidsoii A C. Cameron, S. P. Cameron, M. Wilkinson, .1. h Salmoixl, Joseph MtjGnorge, John Ash, and P. 0. femellie. BOY SCOUTS' USEFUL EFFORT. Mr Fountain reported that after confer* ring, with Mr \V. P. Birchall, county commissioner of Boy Scouts, arrangements had been made for Dunedin Scouts to assist iu collecting young kowhai trees for the Dunedin City Council. These trees, when collected, would be planted out in the City Corporation nursery until they were big enough to plant in reserves. Last Saturday 55 Boy Scouts had assembled in Woodhaugh, and, with the assistance of Mr Birchall and Scout masters, had lifted.approximately 1,500 kowhais, which were loaded on to a corporation truck and planted in the Gardens. Mr Fountain said that the work had been done very willingly, and the boys were obviously interested. He then outlined plans for. lifting tree ferns from the Waitati Valley area, and said that the assistance of the. Boy Scouts had already been promised. He thought that, if the corporation was agieeable, they might also undertake to clear out elderberry and sycamores from the Town Belt. This work would, of course, be done under supervision. —The Chairman expressed the appreciation of those present for the valuable work undertaken by the Boy Scouts and by Mr Fountain.—lt was agreed that, subject to his approval, Mr Birchall be made a member of the committee of the society. SEATING ACCOMMODATION. In reply to the society's request that something be done to improve the seating accommodation for those waiting for trams or buses'in the vicinity of High street and the Stock Exchange, a letter was received from the town clerk indicating that the City Council's Transport Committee was looking into the matter with a view to obtaining the approval of adjoining owners of property to allow the provision of seating on their frontages.—After a discussion, during which speakers expressed the opinion that sheltered seating accommodation should be provided without delay, it was agreed t.o hold over further discussion until the council had had an opportunity of investigating the matter further. SUPPLIES OF TREES. A letter was received from Mr R. H. Bryant. Kinloch, offering to supply native red, white, and silver beech on favourable terms.—Subject to the agreemeut of Mr M R. Skipwqrth, superintendent of reserves, it. was decided that 1,000 trees be purchased for planting out in the City Corporation's nursery until they were big enough to plant in the reserves. TREE PLANTING IN SCARBA STREET. It was agreed, on the recommendation of Mr James Begg, that the sum of £lO be spent on planting on the Town Belt 6ide of Scarba street. Mr Begg drew attention to the fact that the bank near Ross street was being used as a dump, and that the litter looked very unsightly.—lt was agreed that a letter be sent to the corporation drawing attention to this. ARBOR DAY ARRANGEMENTS. Messrs S. P. Cameron, M. Wilkinson, and R. Fountain were appointed to represent the society at a meeting to be held in the Council Chambers to make arrangements for the observance of Arbor Day. The delegates were asked to recommend that the usual arrangements be made for speakers to attend as many schools in the city as possible to address the pupils. Mr A. H. Templeton was appointed acting treasurer pending Mr H. P. Aitken's return from war service.—lt was agreed that a letter of thanks and appreciation for his services and good wishes be forawarded to Mr Aitken.
