SOLDIERS WELCOMED
FUNCTION AT ST. HILDA Men from St. Kilda who have returned home in recent drafts from the Pacific area were welcomed last night at a social tendered to them by the mayor, Mr N".-D. Anderson, and members of the Borough Council in the Coronation Hall. The Mayor .of Dunediu, Mr D. C. Cameron, Colonel S'. M. Satterthwaite, and Mr J. J. Marlow were present on the platform with Mr Anderson. In welcoming the members of the forces present, Mr Anderson said that the people of St. Kilda wished to do everything possible for the men who were returning from the fighting areas. He paid a tribute to these men and to (he nurses and women of the services whose sacrifices were bringing victory nearer and nearer. Mr Cameron and Mr Marlow spoke in similar vein. Interspersed in the speeches were items by the St. Kilda Band, under the conductorship of Mr W. Francis, songs by the Misses P. and E. Clare, Mr M. Robson, and Mr Connor, cornet solos and duets by Bandsmen N. Thorn, R. Rudhall, and J. Glen, and an elocutionary item by Miss W. Dowie. Later in the evening there was dancing, with music supplied by Rodgerson's Band.
