COMMANDO RAIDS

LANDINGS ON LIGURIAN COAST LONG LULL ON MAIN FRONTS (Rec., 11 a.m.) LONDON, May 8. Allied commandos based on Corsica and Sardinia have landed on the Ligurian sector of the Italian coast during the past few days to carry out patrols in preparation for invasion, says the Geneva newspaper 'La Suisse's' Cbiasso correspondent. The report, emanating from non-Fascist circles and unconfirmed from other sources, claims that soime members of the patrols were killed or taken prisoner. Others are believed to have succeeded in their mission and returned to their base with information about the Todt-built fortifications-. Artillery fire has iucreased m intensity on the main Fifth Army front in Italy, but so far there is nothing to indicate that it will be the forerunner of --anew •attack"'to !! b'reak : the lull which has now lasted nearly two months, says the British United Press correspondent at Allied headquarters. ,The tempo of our fire has increased at a number of. points, particularly around Cassino, where the Germans are busily moving men and vehicles. These movements have been effectively shelled. German patrols which penetrated our positions on the upper Garigliano were repulsed by our artillery. The Anzio beachhead had one of the quietest week-ends since the landing. Many of the men spent the week-endl in a " holiday " atmosphere on the bathing beaches in warm sunshine.
