OBITUARY
MR ROBERT SMEATON Much regret was felt in Mosgiel and on the Taieri when it was known that a popular and esteemed resident, Mr Robert Smeaton, had suddenly passed away. He had lived in Mosgiel from childhood, having been born there in 1875. His education was received in Taieri schools, and he followed the calling of blacksmith and wheelwright until he retired from the business a few years ago to go farming. The late Mr Smeaton- took a full share in local activities, having served on the borough council, Tnieri Poultry Society, and Loyal Mosgiel Lodge. In the latter he occupied the chair of Past Grand. During the Boer War he served in the Fourth Contingent. He kept in touch with the veterans of those days and on Thursday members of the association attended the funeral and acted as pall-bearers. His knowledge ot veterinary work was a valuable asset to the farmers of the Taieri. Mr Smeaton married Miss Maggie Aitken, and they had a family of four daughters and three sons. One son was killed in the Italian campaign in December. Another son is still on active service.
